Chapter 18

Sammy’s enthusiasm for loaning us his vehicle was so low that it wasn’t measurable, but he relented in the end. It had taken some convincing, but eventually, he’d agreed that trying to take the T to Watertown to potentially confront a malicious wizard wasn’t the best plan of attack. None of us truly believed Davit Sivaslian was anything more than a man interested in antiquities— maybe a little too interested for his own good, but we had to start somewhere. We’d waited for nightfall, then loaded up the Toyota and went on our way.

The Charles River cut a twisting snake-like swath through Watertown’s downtown area, curling south around Riverland Street. I navigated the Toyota along the same street, a chain link fence running alongside our path.

“For the record, I am not okay with this.” I glanced in the rear view mirror at Indigo, who was sitting in the back seat, her knees pressed tight to her chest, her eyes scanning out the window. We’d left a small residential neighborhood in our wake and approached what appeared to be a sprawling office park to the left, barricaded from the street by the eight-foot tall chain link fence, a cluster of brick and stone buildings sequestered on the other side.

“With what?” Indigo’s voice was the essence of innocence.

“This could be dangerous. You shouldn’t be here.”

“You said it yourself,” Indigo snapped in reply, “it’s probably nothing. And besides, you’re a glorified tabloid reporter. What do you think you’re going to do if things go sideways?”

I curled my fingers around the contoured steering wheel as I eyed the gap in the fence up ahead, a pully-mounted gate swung open to reveal the entrance to the park.

“She has a point.” Troels looked over from where he was wedged tightly within the passenger seat.

“Excuse me?”

He turned toward me and extended a thick index finger, probing me in the midsection.

“You have gotten soft, Angus. Evidently, you are— enjoying your time away.”

Indigo snickered, earning herself a stabbing side eye into the rear view mirror. To our left, the office park spread out even further, a plentiful scattering of white moving trucks slotted into almost a dozen evenly spaced parking spots along the left side. The main office building itself was a three story monolith of sculpted brick, which looked over the trucks with a sort of mournful curiosity.

Near the entrance to the office park, a man stood, staring at us with suspicion from beneath the wide brim of a baseball cap. The logo of a third party security company was stitched onto the dark blue fabric of the cap and he held a clipboard firmly in his hands. As I steered the car toward the open fence, he stepped into the opening and lifted a hand, tilting his head at us.

“Can I help you?” He came around the driver’s side and I zipped down the window as he approached. “Do you have an appointment?”

“We don’t,” I replied, “I just— I’d like to speak with Mr. Sivaslian if he’s available.
